English research scientists have identified increased activity in the right side of the brain in pregnant women. This area is related to emotions and helps explain the increased sensitivity during pregnancy. These changes in neuropsychological activity help ensure mothers are neurologically prepared to bond with their babies at birth. The brain volume of a woman shrinks 4 % during pregnancy and then normalises after birth.
